grappling makes strong kids

Submission grappling can be a fun, high-intensity after-school sport or active hobby for kids ages 3+.

Not only that, research shows that exercises that require the use of high strength - such as grappling - have the greatest osteogenic effects in adolescents (promoting the development of bone-forming cells).

Coach JACK GOODWIN-BAINBRIDGE (1st degree BJJ black belt and experienced grappling educator) has been teaching grappling skills to children over the age of 3 since 2013, and considers it his calling.

Jack views grappling as an effective tool for healthy personal development. He's passionate about helping young people reap the various benefits of grappling as a sport, including confidence, resilience, self-control, discipline, work ethic, and problem-solving—as well as self-defense skills.

KIDS PROGRAMS

Up to 5 years

Tuesdays & Fridays

9:15-10:00am

KindyGrapple™ teaches young children balance, co-ordination and proprioception as well as grappling basics through fun exercises + games. Useful sport + self defence skills such as how to safely use takedowns, how to pin someone, and how to escape pins and stand back up are the core outcomes of these classes.

Kids under 3 are welcome with parent/guardian’s participation in classes until Coach Jack assesses that your child is ready for independent participation. Just ask us!

5-12 years

Mondays & Wednesdays

5:30-6:15pm

JuniorGrapple™ builds on all the above learnings, as well as how to safely perform submission holds. This program teaches older children co-operation, restraint and self-discipline.

We understand that kids under 6 may already be enrolled in primary school and therefore unable to attend our morning classes. In this case, your child may be able to join our JuniorGrapple™ sessions once Coach Jack has met your child, understood their needs + assessed safe partnering. Just ask us!

KIDS grading

How do we do KIDS grading at our academy?

Our approach to kids grading is simple.

We don’t want kids (or parents) becoming obsessed with level / rank.

Kids grappling is about building confidence and capability, learning to keep yourself safe, and having fun.

At Advance, we view grading as acknowledgement of a child’s hard work & effort, without it being the ‘goal’.

Our students don’t wear belts, so we don’t award a physical belt.

We award the corresponding coloured rank signified with a wristband of that colour and a certificate of achievement.

We believe in rewarding a child’s efforts with a record of their achievement and a special keepsake - without encouraging a fixation on rank/level.

KIDS RANK SYSTEM

WHEN IS A NEW KIDS RANK AWARDED?

From the moment a student participates in their first session, they are considered to hold the rank of white.

All further kids rank colours will be awarded at a grading ceremony to which family and friends are invited to attend to celebrate their achievement.

There is no grading ‘test’, nor do you pay a grading/promotion fee - because rank is earned.

HOW CAN I HELP MY CHILD PROGRESS IN THE SPORT?

Earning the next rank is a very individual thing, so times WILL vary from child-to-child. Some will progress faster than the expected time at each level, others may be slower.

If your child focuses on consistent training, enjoying their experience and improving their skills - rank will eventually follow.

Parents can support their child’s progress in grappling by bringing them to class consistently, and encouraging a growth mindset over a rewards mindest.

HOW IS grading JUDGED?

Coach Jack grades based on criteria: minimum time required in the rank, consistent attendance, consistent effort in class, and whether or not your child has achieved the basic skills required for the next rank.

He is constantly assessing these criteria each and every time they train - through attendance tracking, observing each student while they train and spar, and taking into account their competition performance (if applicable).
